I'm Honza, a developer from Czechia 🇨🇿. I build mobile apps with Flutter and Dart, and I've been meaning to start a blog for a long, looooong time.

I actually had one as a kid. I have no idea what I wrote there. All I remember is that it had "squirrel" in its name, and please don't ask me why. This one should age better.

Why now

Most of what I learn at work doesn't fit anywhere. It's too long for a post on social media, too specific for a conference talk, and too useful to leave in a Slack thread that nobody will ever find again. I kept explaining the same things to colleagues, and every time I thought: this should be written down once, properly.

There's also a selfish reason. Writing is how I find out what I actually think. A problem I can explain in a post is a problem I understand. One I can't is a problem I only got working.

What to expect

  • Dart & Flutter. Deep dives, tutorials and the things I ran into in real projects: architecture, testing, performance, and the parts of the framework that surprised me.
  • Lessons from work. Habits, tools and mistakes collected over the years. Some of them will be obvious to you. Some of them took me far too long.
  • Side projects. I keep building small things on the web and in apps, and a few open-source packages, which you'll find under projects. This site is one of them.
  • Sometimes something personal. An old game I still think about, a tool I love, or why I stopped doing something.

How this site is built

This blog is written in Dart too. It's a static site built with Jaspr (opens in a new tab), a Dart web framework, from plain Markdown files. As a Flutter developer I wanted to see how far I can get on the web without leaving the language I use every day. The answer so far: pretty far. I'll write about it, including the parts that didn't work.

The design is meant to look like a notebook: dates in the margin, notes on the side, nothing that moves when you scroll. It should be a quiet place to read.

What this blog isn't

It isn't the place for travel, motorcycles and other activities anymore. Those moved to Scratches Included (opens in a new tab), which I write with my friend Ondra.

It also isn't on a schedule. I'd rather post something worth reading every few weeks than something thin every Monday.

I don't make the covers myself, unfortunately. I just don't have the skills or the time for that. They're generated, some with the help of AI, so if you see a cover you like, it's not mine. The photos and screenshots are real, though.

Say hi

There are comments below every post now, so if you'd rather see deep dives, quick tips or a look behind the scenes of a project, tell me there. And if something I write is wrong, tell me that too. That's the part of blogging I'm looking forward to the most.
